The idea is to generate many areas, generated by drivetimezones. The more non-overlapping drivetimezones you create, the higher your score. Once there are two drivetimezones overlapping, you loose.

Ok, it sounds not so exciting, does anybody have a better idea for a game with Mappoint?

I'll set my drive time zone to be centred on Brum with a 600 mil radius

A while back I did think about games. I couldn't think of anything, but then I never really thought about it much.

I remember a board game that I played once which was based on the London Underground. No, not Mornington Crescent
This game had you going around visiting set locations (chosen by draw, so perhaps you have to visit two museums, Lords, and Buckingham Palace, say). You move round with dice ("3" would move you 3 stations, etc).
I can't remember how it happened now (double 6??) but it was possible to disable interchange stations. Hence you could make it more difficult or even impossible for the opposing players.

ANYWAY, I was thinking of something like that but I don't know how it would work.

Hi,
I am planning to translate the Monopoly game in M&M Game ( MapPoint Monopoly Game).
The French Monopoly board features the streets of Paris. It was designed in 1935 and has not been updated since. Is the real-estate geography of the 1930s still valid? The authors propose a new version of the Paris Monopoly to better reflect today’s real-estate and social hierarchy. For example, there are Camels using Gps units , delivering couscous, pastilla, etc.

http://mappemonde.mgm.fr/num5/articles/art05104.html

You can send me your ideas, you will win a delicious couscous from AtlasCouscous, delivered by a Camel just in time ( Mappoint optimizing !!!! )

http://www.AtlasCouscous.com

Cheers

Hi,

Monopoly sounds good for a game. But not just monopoly as it is, it can be larger, you can sell, hire, buy, cities or even countries. You have to travel to your owned things by means of route planner, etc... Just a tought.. I'm not good in this

Wasn't it obvious

RISK? The classic battle game Global Domination. Isn't it too obvious?

Look RISK up here:

http://www.boardgames.com/risk.html

There are software versions of the game. None that work off MapPoint as far as I know. There is an OK one here:

http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/conquest.html

Costs like $20 to $40.

As an alternative maybe the game of AtlasCoucous.

Game has 100 customers on a stree map of Paris
Player has 5 camels that can carry couscous to 4 customers at a time.
Player has a warehouse with 200 kilos of couscous.

Random calls are generated eaching asking for a delivery of a 1 or 2 kg couscous order to a Paris address at a specific time.
A small program updates the location of your camels few seconds based on the routes you give them.

You score + points if you can direct (route) your camel to respond to a call with on time delivery.
You score + points if the couscous warehouse is empty at the end of the game.
You score bonus points based on the % of your 100 customers who are served during the game.
You score - points if your deliver early or late.
You score big - points if you miss a delivery.
You could add all sorts of random 'glitches' to the game:
- customer not home
- customer cancels order after you dispatched the camel
- customer changes the order after you dispatched the camel
- camel takes sick time, holiday, smoke break
- camel goes extra slow cuz he had a fight with is wife/mother
- camel goes extra fast cuz he had too much wine at lunch
- camel gets lost
- camel has a break down
- Paris has a traffic jam that makes the camel change his route
- camel reroutes himself to the flower shop (see wife / mother above)
- option to use a contractor camel but he costs - points

Speed everything up so a 16 hours day is played in 16 minutes. Go for a multi player version where sometimes your customer calls another player based on you current score and couscous inventory. Sound about right Moh? I think it is a great idea... Make it an open source project - we can contribute to the code.

Ciao,

I think Risk might have trademark problems, and some of us never bothered to learn how to play it

I like the thinking though. Shade the counties/countries/states/whatever according to who controls them or status.

RISK for MapPoint

You are right RB. There would be trade mark issues. This why Sean O'Connor called his game Conquest. Maybe the MapPoint war game could be called MS Domination of Redmond Wars or something that plays on MS's global market share.

Years ago I flogged MI and we had a game in MapBasic called RISK. It was used to teach new users how to use MapInfo. No one seemed to mind. I see a guy named Steve has a simliar thing over at the Directions Mag Blog.

http://www.directionsmag.com/files/index.php/view/613

The great thing about doing this in mapping software like MapPoint is that you can change the starting territory setup and thus change the game/strategy for different territory layouts.

Ciao,
