MP 2006 - disappointment for developers

The same crippled COM object, not a .Net approach.
And the improvments are close to null... excerpts from product help:

What's new for Microsoft MapPoint 2006 developers
There are no new methods for this version of MapPoint.

The Location object supports two new properties: Latitude and Longitude. The MapStyle property now supports a road map style for low light conditions: geoMapStyleNight

More information
Location Object
MapStyle property

THAT'S ALL, FOLKS...

Hi,

If not then it was only useable in dotNet.

This is a good improvement.

What about roads ? In mappoint 2002 whole Europe was coveraged, but in 2004 only some of the countries. What about this version ?

Europe is yet to be released - I hear the delay is partly due to more data. We shall see what the coverage is like MP2004's decrease in coverage disappointed a lot of people!

The Latitude,Longitude properties are a good thing. We now have to decide if we want to drop support for earlier versions and use these properties, or try to detect the version and use Gilles' CalcPos for older versions.

Yes you right. Maybe a simple try except catch is enough. If the properties not exists then the older code can run. What do you think ?

We were somehow excepting there will be very few improvements as their main focus is on the web based services.
Is there anyway to get the street type (like interstate, state highway etc) so that we can use it for speed limits ? Mappoint has the data(it uses it to compute travel time), its just not exposed.

Thanks

Agreed.
I would have expected them to have exposed at least the following features in the object model:
  • 1) Map rotation
    2) GPS info (all of the stats that are reported in the nifty GPS pane)
    3) Location Awareness
    4) Voice Prompts/Route
Several other weaknesses in the old 2K4 version also remain unimproved.

Well, I guess we are lucky at all that we even have MapPoint 2006.
I heard last year that they were going to stop development of the MapPoint desktop product.
