Many Questions about Mappoint

I am developing software with vb.net. A new project is to make some sort of fleet management. The PDA is equiped with the routeplanner TomTom. With the SDK from TomTom i want to get the coordinates and send them to a server at a company which put the data in a database. Is it possible to make a vb.net application with MapPoint, so i can see "realtime" (i know there must be a delay) where all the people are, what new target is, where they drove already (tracing ?) so i can exactly see where they have driven last weak or something. And is it possible keep track of the Miles they drove ? And can i see multiple cars on screen ?

I am searching for a while but cant find the exact answerd so i give it i try now

Thanks in advance, great forum

Sorry for bad language, i am from Holland

Tom

Thanks, I think this is a great forum, too.

"With the SDK from TomTom i want to get the coordinates and send them to a server at a company which put the data in a database."

I'm not familiar with Tom-Tom. Be careful with the fleet tracking restrictions in MapPoint 2004 (maybe use MapPoint 2002 .

How are you going to send them? via cellular or radio link?

Regarding these items: "Is it possible to make a vb.net application with MapPoint, so i can see "realtime" (i know there must be a delay) where all the people are, what new target is, where they drove already (tracing ?) so i can exactly see where they have driven last weak or something. And is it possible keep track of the Miles they drove ? And can i see multiple cars on screen ?"

It's all certainly possible with some database/data management and custom programming with MapPoint.

BTW, there are lots of pre-built solutions with MapPoint, this company used to be a sponsor: www.Locarta.com ... Fleetboss also comes to mind.
You might give them a call and see what they recommend, might save your company some time and effort. (tell them I sent you .

Thanks for your quick reply Eric. With the sdk from TomTom we can get the latitude en lotitude etc. With GPRS we are sending data from the PDA to a server which saved the data in a database. With a VB.NET application combined with MapPoint we want to get the milage, the time, and the real time positions from 7 drivers. What can be the restriction from Microsoft Mappoint (fleet tracking restriction)? or is this all oke ? Only 1 user is using Mappoint. and only 7 different drivers will be monitored.

Thanks in advance.

Here's the relevant portion:

Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, use of the Software Product for any Fleet Application is limited to fleets of fifty (50) vehicles or less; and Real-time vehicle guidance applications are not allowed, irrespective of fleet size. For Fleet Applications, You must obtain a license for each vehicle, ie if You have five (5) vehicles, You must obtain five (5) licenses.

"Fleet Applications" shall mean software, products or systems capable, in Real-time or Near-real time, of any one or more of locating, monitoring, tracking, calculating and/or presenting routes and/or driving directions, including optimized routes and/or driving directions from multiple origins to multiple destinations and/or optimization of routes across multiple vehicles, and/or dispatching, two or more vehicles the positions of which are in any way determined using GPS Technology or any other Positioning Technology.

"Positioning Technology" shall mean GPS Technology or any other technology, devices and/or sensors that allow an application to determine in Real-time or Near-real time the position and/or velocity of a person, vehicle, device or other object.

"Real-time" solutions are those applications in which there is no measurable delay between the time at which a GPS location is acquired and the time this location is made available to the application. “Near real-time” takes into account network latency, transmission time and any other systems delays.

You also may not use Software Product with or in communication with any mobile or wireless-connected electronic or computer devices (except to the extent expressly permitted herein), including, without limitation, cellular phones, palmtop and handheld computers, pagers, and personal digital assistants or PDAs.

Eric, thanks for your feedback. Is it possible to make it a webbased application. How can this be done ? Or are there any good tutorials about it to develop a webbased fleet application.

Thanks in advance

Web based application

Yes a web base application can be done (I have done a version for test purposes)

1) Basically, setup web site and have page that show users vehicle.
2) On server or slave PC setup mapoint with comms link
3) User requests location via web
4) Server then requests location (simply creates a request file either on server or salve PC)
5) Server or slave PC links with Tracking unit and gets relevant data
6) Server or Slave PC creates a web page track position (very eany in VB)
7) Places this created web page on server
User looks at page and sees position.

All this needs VB and a certain amount of coding, also a tracknig unit that you can configure to do what you require.

Thanks
