348 John Colburn - August 21, 2001

I have created 5 pixel (crosses) of various colors taken from the approved sample palette. The map redraw rate in a multiple symbol map is several hundred times slower than when using the smallest dot set of MapPoint 2002 standard colors. Why? Are there any guidelines or work-arounds using the AX control? Any Microsoft-approved add-in symbols that can be quickly redrawn?

Answer:

Custom pushpins are stored inside the .ptm MapPoint file format, while MapPoint's own set of icons is part of the application's resources. This is what explains the difference in redraw speed. We have noticed a performance difference but not as radical as a factor of several hundred.
