Why would the export to excel fuction be disabled?

Answer:

For this function to work, I think you need to have Excel 97 or higher installed on your computer.

If you have Excel installed and working properly, you need to make sure there is data on your map. Then, you need to specify what data you want to export. You do this by drawing a box, circle or polyline around the area that contains the data you want to export. If you use the polyline tool, make sure you right-click the line and select the Close Curve option before you try to export data.

You should now be able to right-click the drawing shape and use the Export to Excel option.
