  MAPPOINT Q & A

We just purchased Mappoint 2002 and have Excel 2000. When we try to either Export to Mappoint or use the import wizard we get an invalid format error. What should the Excel file look like? Or are we doing something else wrong.

Answer:

MapPoint supports data in a wide variety of formats including Excel 2000. Your data should obviously contain some geographic references, otherwise MapPoint can't map it, but even if you have random data without any geographic markers, you should not get an "invalid format" error.

Our advice would be to save your Excel data in text (CSV/TXT) format and try importing the data that way. If this works, it would point to a problem with your Excel installation rather than MapPoint. You can also try to create a very simple Excel spreadsheet from a blank workbook, with just two columns (City and State) and one row (Chicago in the City column, IL in the State column). If this works, your Excel installation is OK but there is something in the other file MApPoint doesn't like.

Another thing to try is to copy your data in Excel, then go to MapPoint, and Paste it onto the map. This may work differently than using the Import Data function.
