I need to create "location" maps (like often seen in Hotel/Motel directories). The ultimate work product is a printed directory. I would like to create the maps and export the file for use in a desktop publishing program like Quark or Pagemaker. I think, after using MapPoint, that I am "using a nuclear power plant to boil water for tea" - and there is control over the level of detail. Can anyone suggest another application I might review? The resulting maps from MP2K seem to be oriented to electronic, interactive use. What would be a good application for hard copy?
Answer:
If you're looking for "schematic" maps, I don't think mapping products will be of much use. Mapping software like MapPoint reflects the "real world" with all of its complexity - and if I understand you correctly you want maps that show a simplified artistic impression reality.
You will probably have to buy a drawing program and sketch the location maps yourself. That is how most of these maps are created - by graphic designers using their preferred drawing tools.
