Does Mappoint 2002 use demographic data (population) based on the 2000 census. Or is the data still based on projections?
Answer:
The US demographic data in MapPoint 2002 is licensed from Claritas. It is based on the 1990 US Census, but the 2000 and 2005 projections are based on actual data gathered up to the year 2000. So whereas they are not figures from the 2000 Census, they aren't projections done in 1990 based on 1990 data either.
For what it's worth, Claritas and other providers of demographic data will tell you that their projections are actually more accurate than the data provided by the Census because they "validate" the data they collect. The Census has a bigger sample size, but nobody really checks to make sure that what respondents fill in on the questionnaire is correct.
