516 Marilyn Lieber - November 29, 2001

Our nonprofit wants to use mappoint to show where our various statewide programs are in place. We want our map to be just Michigan and we want to add legislative district lines both state and federal to Michigan. I'm at the very starting point and would benefit from Mappoint for dummies, and have tried to find a course around here, but have been unsuccessful. Need HELP getting started. Thanks

Answer:

You cannot just see Michigan - you'll always get the whole map. Of course, you can zoom in tightly so Michigan is at the center with just a few other pieces of geography around it, but you cannot take just Michigan.

Adding the specific boundaries you are talking about is now possible through the Spatial Data Import sample utility. You would need to get the right polyline files for these district lines in ESRI SHP of MapInfo MIF format, and feed it into the utility to add it on top of the MapPoint map as a drawing overlay. It won't become part of the map, but you can use it as a visual reference and to do "point in poly" operations.
