We want to use MapPoint on a Laptop computer in vehicles and tie it to a fixed mount GPS receiver so they will know their actual location. Any suggestions for appropriate receivers? Thanks.

Answer:

I'm not a GPS guy, but from a quick search of the Microsoft MapPoint newsgroup:

"Any good Garmin will do the trick for you." - Vic Fraenckel

"... For MapPoint and GPSes - the requirements are: connection via a serial interface, at NMEA levels (NMEA is also a hardware spec), support for the NMEA 2.0 protocol." - Gilles Kohl

"The [Delorme] Earthmate outputs a proprietary "Rockwell binary protocol" instead of NMEA. [Walt: This is not good. Although Vic Fraenckel mentions http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak/ where you can get a converter for NMEA compatibility.]" - Gilles Kohl

- Walt Cygan
