Doug Popken Using MapPoint in a Routing Application Part 3 - Lessons Learned

In this final installment of a three part article, Doug Popken discusses "lessons learned" and provides insights into obtaining the time zone, obtaining optimal routes, and programming an application to work with both MapPoint North America and Europe.

"To compute correct ETA information for route stops, Route Factory Spreadsheet needs to determine the correct time zone for each location because a route may cross time zones. The time zone information is not directly available programmatically in MapPoint. In the book by Chandu Thota, “MapPoint in .NET”, a time zone determination algorithm is provided that searches the MapPoint FindResults objects at a given location for the string, “GMT” to derive the information. Frankly, we could never get this algorithm to work in MapPoint 2010. In addition, for the purposes of getting the correct ETA, we also wanted to know whether or not a given location observes Daylight Savings Time."

MPMileCharterUsing MPMileCharter to create Mileage Charts with Microsoft MapPoint

Richard Marsden writes about how MPMileCharter (formerly MileCharter) can be used to compute a matrix of distances between pushpins and pushpins sets. A major re-write was recently released as MPMileCharter 3.0.

"This article describes our popular MPMileCharter product. After being on the market for over six years, Winwaed Software Technology LLC recently released a major new version "MPMileCharter 3.0". This represents a major rewrite for the .NET platform, allowing a smoother and more responsive user interface, and enabling support for future versions of Windows. MPMileCharter 3 includes a number of new features. The most significant is the support for text file outputs. Microsoft Excel continues to be supported, but MPMileCharter can also write mileage charts to text files separated by commas, semi-colons, or tabs."
