Hi EB
Can i use the Map point control features in my project. for e.g if you run
the Mappoint.exe, goto Tools. There are list of features which i want to
encorporate in my project. for e.g Location Sensor, Measure Distance etc.
does Mappoint has a method or property by which i can call these inbuilt
functions or do i have to write VB code for giving these features in my
project.
I am inserting the Map point control(OCX) on my form and now on click of the
buttons, i want those features which are already provided by Mappoint
control. so if i press "Measure Distance" button, it should give me the
distance between the 2 places in miles on my Map Control. This is my exact
requirement.
Please Help as it is on high priority for me.

I am wondering if anyone has built a COM add-in application or has written VB code that will query two sets of data in MapPoint 2002 and determine whether the locations of dataset 1 (imported address info from excel) are within a given radius of dataset 2 (also imported address info from excel)
Would like to eventually create a form that accepts the following inputs:
DATASET 1: user may select a dataset already imported to the current MapPoint file
DATASET 2 same operation as dataset 1
RADIUS: the distance in miles from the data points within dataset 1 that will be used to find the data points within dataset 2.
OUTPUT FILENAME: allows the user to specify the filename of a new excel file where the results of the query will be stored.
I am guessing that the records from dataset 1 would have to be converted to lat/long in order to create the radius and capture the resulting pushpins from dataset 2?
Appreciate any response that might help me address and solve this problem

[Background]
I am developing a demonstration system of security handset
with GPS receiver for Asian and European customers.
In this system, I will use MicroSoft MapPoint software to show the position on PC.
The MapPoint has good map data ( = street level maps that enough to demonstrate GPS positioning accuracy) for many countries except Taiwan and mainland China.
So, in case of these countries, I have to find a way to get good map
data.
[Questions]
1. Do you know of a source for Taiwan and mainland China maps which may be used with MicroSoft MapPoint ?
2. Do you know any map data conversion software which can produce map data for MicroSoft MapPoint ?

When geocoding with MP2002 I have found when using Canadian Data, MP2002 does not seem to want to geocode to the address level and reverts to the postal code level. Even though the address was pointed to, the Geocoding engine seems to ignore the fact that address data at the street level is visable. However when re geocoding the data with the Postal code stripped out leaving street level information and city information MP2002 then proceeded to geocode to the city .
Does MP2002 possess the ability to geocode to the street address level in Canada and if how so does this work?
Also when looking for specific location the goeocoder misplaced the location and placed the address requested at the start node of the street.
I wonder whether this is the result on not being able to include address information in the product. If so the product is very easy to use and displays data at the postal code layer which is very similar to the desire to geocode to the Zip Code level in the US. MapPoint 2002 has lots of promise,it has taken the mystery away from GIS and put some very powerful analytic tools in the hands of neophytes. It can only get better, and with the application development tools available for third party application developers, it may become the product of choice for the masses. Microsoft works on volume. Prices reflect volume and introduce spatial data analysis to untold new users who otherwise would have never seen their data because of price restrictions of data and software.

I know the coordinates of 700 points of sale and I know the closest point of sale and the "crow flies distance" to that closest point of sale. I would like to add to my table of customers the drive distance to the closest point of sale. Thus I have a table: [cust_ID], [CLOSEST_POS_ID], [customer_latitude], [customer_longitude], [closest_POS_latitude] and [closest_POS_longitude], [drive_distance]. I would like to be able to do an update query that would populate the [drive_distance] field with the actual drive distance. If I have a dataset that is linked to a spreadsheet, is it possible to unlink it?
My reason - I would like to update a spreadsheet, then update my map using the links between the datasets and the spreadsheet. Then, I would like to move some pushpins from one dataset to another, based on what I see on the map. Right now, because the datasets are linked to external data, I cant move a pushpin from one dataset to another. So, one solution would be to update my map using all the links, then Unlink the datasets, leaving me free to move individual pushpins from one data set to another.

When I do export the custom territory to excel it does output the territory name and zip codes included but I also want the push pin info exported too.

Hi,
I'm looking for a software package that can give me a friendly interface to look-up addresses in a specific territory. There's a tight region of territory that I serve that cuts across zip codes covering 30 square miles. I'm wondering if Map Point has the ability for me to mark the territory on a map and then simply type in the address of a would-be customer to see if they're in my serving territory.
This kind of thing is similiar to mapquest where you input the address and they'll point to the location on the map. Only this time, the map has a specific territory shaded. I would think that pizza delivery companies would find this useful to new customers online.

Requirement:
We are looking for a software program that would allow us to enter 15000 locations, then by typing in one location (street+city+state or zip), pull up a list of all locations within, say, a 5, 10 or 20 mile radius. The user should be able to enter the location and the radius on web page and would see a map of the location with nearby locations marked on it and a list of the same nearby locations.
Solution:
I used Mappoint to achieve this using the following process:
- I created a map and imported 15,000 locations into 2 datasets (pushpin sets.2 setsare required as it cannot import more than 10000 in one set).
- I wrote a DLL that connects to the Mappoint software, calls the FIndAddressResults() method to find the user entered location.
- It then calls QueryCircle() method on eash dataset to find all locations falling in the user provided radius. It takes the resultsets, calculates each location's distance to the user entered location and sorts the list.
- It then calls Union() method and GOTO() methods to zoom to the area with the locations searched and saves the map as an HTML page.
- It then displays the list to the locations found nearby to the user with the map image extracted from the saved HTML page.
- This DLL gets called from the ASP page which provides the user interface to enter the location to search and the radius.
By doing so, I was able to get results. But when I did a stress testing by making multiple request simultaneously (made 10 requests for testing purpose) to the web page, it seemed to slow down to an unacceptable extend. I saw 3-4 MapPoint.exe processess running and taking 100% of the CPU. This made the whole web site so slow that it took a few minutes to serve a web page on a T1 connection. Also the resulting locations and maps came up for all the requests but it took an average time of 2-3 minutes for it to provide the location results. This made the solution unacceptable.
Questions:
My question is, Did I do this right?
Is there a better way of implemention the solution which would make it work faster and not take over 100% of cpu?
Is this product recommended for use in such web related scenario?

I specified the legend to show a range of 0, 5, and 10, but when I print, it shows 0, 5, and 1. as if it has run out of room. Even when I expand the size of the margin for the legend, it still will not print the full text of "10". What's the deal?

I am plotting data by zip codes for Seminole County in Florida. I created an Excel file with all the zip codes in one column and my data in another. When I link to MP2K, and create the map, some of the zip codes are mixed with others. For instance 32746 and 32795 data values are combined by the program, and color coded as such, and there is no boundary between them. I want to show discrete values and boundaries for each zip code. Is this possible?

46013 South Zone
46018 South Zone
46019 South Zone

I import this data successfully into Mappoint using ImportTerritories method. Immediately after importing the data, I do a query on the Mappoint control using QueryAllRecords method. The method returns 7 records and I am able to access each record succssfully.
After this I add a zipcode to territory North Zone USING TERRITORY MANAGER. Immediately after this I again query the dataset. Now, the recordset returned is EMPTY! (EOF and BOF are TRUE); RecordCount = 7 (NOT 8!) and I am not able to access the individual records. Why does this happen? How can I access the Dataset again to get 8 records?

Is this possible with MapPoint ?
I am using the full version of MapPoint 2002. I am about to attempt a programming project with VB & MapPoint. I will take a list of data from a sql database (name, zipcode) and create a territory. I will then programatically add Zipcodes to the territory from another table in the SQL database joined by "name" -> territory name . The map would then be stored and used as part of a Visually workflow via the mappoint control on VB Form. The map would also be functional by providing editing capibilities of the territory and would be required to save the "changed data" back to the SQL Database table.
Looking at the Mappoint object model. I do not see a "Territory object" Nor do not see any functions that add or remove data from an existing territory. I do see two Functions LinkTerritories and ImportTerritories that appear to create new territories only. Am I missing something ?
Thanks !

I'm developing an application in VFP that uses the MapPoint 2002 ActiveX component. The embedded object functions just fine but when I try to leave my application I get a "Cannot quit VFP" error. This error occurs when there is an open link to a third party component still active and so windows won't let you terminate the instantiating program. I've verified all of my clean up code, but the problem persists. Is there some thing specific to the ActiveX object that I might not be aware of? I saw your artical on the reg file alterations, might this be related?
Note: We don't get the same problem with the COM object.
Steps: Add an ole container with a MapPoint object to a form. Create a new map, find an address, release all created pointers, close map, release object and attempt to exit the application.

I am trying to write some code which mimicks the behaviour of clicking on a direction line in a calculated route, i.e. the map is zoomed to show a good view of this road segment in green, the turn is highlighted blue, a pushpin is placed at the turn location with the pop-up text being the turn instruction.
I have tried the following code:
Dim oMap As MapPoint.Map
Dim oRte As MapPoint.Route
Set oMap = GetObject(, "MapPoint.Application").ActiveMap
Set oRte = oMap.ActiveRoute
oRte.Waypoints.Add oMap.FindAddressResults(, "London", , ) (1)
oRte.Waypoints.Add oMap.FindAddressResults(, "Birmingham", , ) (1)
oRte.Calculate
Dim i As Integer
Dim loc As MapPoint.Location
For i = 1 to oRte.Directions.Count
loc := oRte.Directions.Item[i].Location
loc.GoTo
loc.Highlight = true
MsgBox "Here is a turn"
Next i
This runs, but the behaviour is not as expected. The locations returned display larger sections of the route, and is centered on what seems an arbitary point, there is no highlighting, and no pushpin.
Can anyone help with reproducing this behaviour.
Thanks Brian

I am using MapPoint Control in another ActiveX control, which is loaded
by a web page.
The following is the Terminate() method in the ActiveX, hoping to help it better
unload the Mappoint Control, since I don't know how to signal it to unload
Private Sub UserControl_Terminate()
oMap.Saved = True
Set oMap = Nothing
End Sub
However, if I close IE instead of go to another page, the Mappoint
Control may be failed to unload itself. On Windows2000, this will leave an
orphan MapPoint process running there forever, and on Window 98, it simply crush
the OS. But if I move to another page, close browser after, say, 3 minutes,
everything will be fine.
So I guess it's because Mappoint needs time to unload but the container did wait.
So, how to unload MappointControl explicitly? and how do I know if it
is unloaded successfully, so I can kill myself safely ?
Thanks a lot!

This must be so, because everytime I try to import tract information from the 2000 Census, many records are not matched.
Why is this so and are there any plans to update this?

To be more precise, when you drag your mouse over a respective area your data you have mapped is displayed for viewing. It's this information I want to have available when I print a copy. 2) Overlay the details of our operators on the map from our database.
3) Feed data back (ie operator code) to the in-house app.
4) Locate clients on the map by Postcode, town name, road name and numbers etc.
Also, is the map data regularly updated, or do you need to buy the new product each year?

As it stands now, most locations that I feed MapPoint have fully resolved addresses but there are always those for which I have only a general idea of the area for any given reason - wasn't written down, not posted, or MapPoint will not recognize what is a proper address. For those, I play pin the tail on the MapPoint, and extract out the Longitude/Latitude using one of the available hacks to get the location in the right ball park. The problem comes when it's time to import the data in mass. If I map both the L/L & Address fields, it matches only for L/L. I have to reimport the same list twice using different field mapping settings to get all of the data onto the map. This still doesn't cut it however because, outside of being a PITA, the data cannot be analyzed as a whole. MapPoint will not recognize, for painfully obvious reasons I guess, pins from different sets when matched with different settings, as compatible for analysis. If I could find a way to collapse different data sets into one after matching, perhaps that would do. Much better, it would seem, would be to have the program sort it out on the front end.

My company recently purchased two copies of the MapPoint 2002 60-day trial software. The two users who are evaluating the software are using Windows NT 4.0 and do not have administrative rights to the local machine. The trail software was installed under the administrator user ID and works fine when logged on as the administrator. When logged on as the actual user, the trial software thinks that the software has expired. I have tried giving the user administrative rights and re-installing the software but the software still says it has expired. Is there anyway to correct this problem?

I am software marketing manager in Beirut, Lebanon and I visualize a high demand for this mapping software.
Is it possible to have MapPoint 2002 customised for businesses located in Beirut? If so, can our team do the customisation, ie embed the geographical data (streets, highways, parcs, retail stores, banks, hotels, etc..)to that software.
If not, our company can collaborate with private and public institutions here in Beirut to acquire the geographical data needed, and send them to you and to come up with

I would appreciate your concern for sending me an informative reply or else refer me to the person in charge.

I am using the Great Britain version of MappPoint2000. I have various datasets (as Acess Databases and comma separated text files) georeferenced to GB Ordnance Survey grid references. When I tried to create pushpin sets by importing the textfile data into MapPoint2000 I encountered some problems which I have not been able to overcome (the on-line help is very scant on detail on data importing):-
1. The import wizard only allows you to define one column as the location. The georeferencing of my datasets is stored as 6 figure national grid reference in 2 separate fields, one for the easting and one for the northing (ie. XXXXXX, YYYYYY) - this is normal practice with GIS data.
2. Undaunted I persevered and rejigged one of my datasets and combined the easting and northing into one field in the form of XXXXXX YYYYYY and re-imported it. It sort of of recognised it as OS data as it put it off the SW coast of Britain near the national grid origin (ie. 0,0) but obviosly did not gecognise it as 6 figure OS grid reference. It also only mapped 3 out of 106 records, but didn't tell me about the unmapped ones!
My question therefore is :-
1. What is the proper procedure for importing data that is georeferenced to GB Ordnance Survey grid references stored as separate 6 figure eastings and northings?
2. Is the procedure different (better?) for MapPoint2002?
Regards
Angus

As a developer of emergency services mission critical applications, one of the most important points to our customers regarding MapPoint is the frequency of updates to the underlying mapbase especially as there appears to be no way to update (or to easily supplement the map data for long term road closures, new roads, etc) the underlaying maps.
Given that MS say that the maps are currently less then 1 year out of date (see previous MS replies), what will be the frequency of updates and costs (or will we have to wait for each new release of MapPoint and effectively re-purchase the product) ?
Or will the "updates" be available from alternative sources ?

I'm now using MapPoint 2001 and my MapPoint 2002 upgrade is on its way. My question has to do with the demographics/mapping data that is supplied with the program. I have been importing zip codes from an Access database and several of them are not mappable. Although this is partly because some of them are non-geographic, it is also because some of them are new zipcodes. As you know, the USPS issues new zipcode data every two months. I'm hoping that 2002 will have more up-to-date data than 2001. Even then, it will be out of date in a few months. Will I ever be able to update the mapping functionality of MapPoint software so that it can keep up and be able to map new zipcodes? If not, could you suggest any workarounds?

I have 5 or 6 seperate data layers showing in the legend

In the old Streets and Trips I upgraded from, you had the map

of point layers and also you could drag and drop data
layers and points from set to set. I miss this ability

Mappoint looks to be a good product, but pin maps fail to produce a good thermic map because you do not know how many data records are in each pin. It would be good if one could specify and grid size (eg 250metres if dealing at street level), and create a thermic map, coloured based on the numbers of data records in each grid.

I work for an online travel company which sells hotel rooms at discounted rates. We would like to use street-level maps exported from MapPoint to display our hotel locations on our web site. Maps used on our web site will cover the US, Canada, and Europe.
According to the microsoft web site and EULA, it seems we are permitted to use the maps on our web site if we do not re-sell them for profit. However I want to verify that there is not some sort of commercial use restriction that prohibits our company from using them in the manner described above.
Can you provide further clarification here? I e-mailed the
Microsoft Permissions/Copyright Group (Law & Corporate Affairs), but their reply only provided a link to the Microsoft Permission Website, which does not address this issue.

Can you get that kind of Moving-map functinality with a GPS? Route recalulation and turn by turn prompts? What the leat expensive portable GPS would I need that had maximum functionality whenb plugged into my laptop running MP2K? Do I need an extgernal antenna and do the portable GPSs have a connnection for extgernal antennas? How do they connect to the laptop? Serial, USB...?
Second question: Is there a download of greater detail of Canada? All the roqads are there but little commercial data about hotels and restaurants (actually none)
Thanks in advance.

I have written a program using the mappoint objects to plot our client database directly from MSSQL 7. I have a question regarding zooming. Basically, I am plotting the points dynamically as pushpins. When the user chooses Alaska for example, all Alaska points are plotted as pushpins. This works fine, but when I save the map, it saves the whole US. I have been trying to figure out the ZoomTo property of the DataSets, but can't figure out how to assign my pushpins to a dataset...can you give an example? there is nothing in the help or on MSDN concerning this. It appears that I have to import from a file and assign to a DataSet. I am more interested in assigning pushpins to a dataset.
thanks in advance!

Unfortunately this will not install properly on my UK version of Windows and therefore I am unable to map the US data (incidentally my main market). Does anyone know a way around this - can I trick my Mappoint into thinking I have a US OS - or can the UK version of Mappoint load up the USA template so I can map the data. I presume UK Mappoint does not have as detailed a map of the USA as the US version? Please help I desperately need to map this data.

We have MP2001 and a csv file with OS gridrefs for the UK. If you use MP wizard to import it works fine, but using the programatic way using .ImportData it doesn't understand the data. i.e
Set oDS = .ImportData(szconn, geoFieldOSGridRef, geoCountryUnitedKingdom, geoDelimiterComma, geoImportFirstRowNotHeadings)
If the CSV has Zip codes it is fine, but not with OS Grids.

We are using MapPoint 2001 but hope you can still help.
We have an Excel spreadsheet which lists hospitals that use and don't use our products (single column with a yes or no for use or don't use). As a hospital starts to use our products, we want to change the column entry from
a no to a yes and want to automatically "refresh" the map to change the color of a pushpin from a "no" color to a "yes" color. Often there are several hospitals in each city, so pushpins seem to be the best representation. We realize we can accomplish the desired end result by filtering the Excel Worksheet, creating two separate worksheets for
hospitals that use and don't our products each time after modifying the info, then importing each with a different color pushpin and recreating a new map each time we do updates. It seems that there should be more of an automated way to do this, perhaps by somehow using the "data ranges" which
quite frankly I don't understand. I would be very grateful for your help.
Thank you!

Microsoft in Norway and UK have actually not been able to help me on this one so now I have a little hope that someone out there or maybe the right persons in Microsoft (California?) can help me..
I wonder whether it's possible to embed MapPoint 2001 activeX component in an OLE container and program the MapPoint 2001 object library. We have already managed to automate it from a remote Visual Basic application, but want to have it inside our own Visual Basic application (for example access the objects directly from buttons which is inside the same form as Mappoint activeX component..). It actually can seem like that Microsoft have tried to prevent the user from do this task due to different reasons.. or maybe I'm wrong ?
Maybe there exist some possible developers edition of Microsoft 2001 (maybe not mentioned in Microsofts publications/papers) which can make such type of embeding possible? What's the price and other conditions if such option do exist?
Hope someone understands what I really mean and that someone possibly can help in some ways :-) !
